A Place To Get Help

by Dave Larson on January 29, 2012

Having a problem with Twitter? Leave a comment below (and send us a tweet telling us you have left a comment) and we’ll read and respond!

If we’ve asked you to provide details here, you MUST do that (and stop tweeting us). We can’t help you without more details first.

BUT: We won’t respond if you don’t provide some details. We just need you to do two things:

  1. Tell us what app or website you are using (e.g Twitter.com or Twitter for iPhone, etc.).
  2. Be very specific in describing the problem. Include URLs to make it clear where the problem is if using Twitter.com. Don’t say things like “I can’t see my tweets!”

If you don’t provide those details, we may not be able to help, so please take a moment to be clear.

If we need the details of the phone or computer you’re using when the problem happens click here to see the details of your system to paste into your comment.

Working With Twitter

Although we’ve helped thousands of people, realize that we don’t work for Twitter, but we will help you if can.

You may need to create a ticket to get Twitter to help you. If you do, it’s crucial that you read about how to work with Twitter’s ticket system. If you already have a Twitter ticket, be sure to read about how to work with Twitter’s ticket system right now, before leaving us a comment.

Confusingly, it may be critical that you DO NOT create a new ticket, or it may be critical that you DO create a new ticket, so be sure to read about how to work with Twitter’s ticket system if you haven’t already. As

At it says there, use Twitter’s online system, not email or tweets, to contact Twitter. You will get an email you must respond to. You must NOT create multiple tickets. We can’t do anything to help you in working with Twitter except help with problems we know solutions for—of which there are many—or help you manage working with Twitter’s help system.

Why This Page?

I’m providing this page so that if you need more room than a tweet allows to describe your problem, you’ll have plenty of space :-)

Why send a tweet too? Because we see tweets quicker than we see blog comments. But we’ll see your comment even if you never send us a tweet.

I need instructions on how to create a Twitter account for a month long event that is an annual thing, but this is the first year we will be using Twitter to promote it.

Do you have any instructions on how to set up an account for an event that does not list any one person’s name? I don’t want the page to identify anyone.

Thanks.

Dave Larson May 14, 2012 at 12:33 AM

Unless there are specific issues you are concerned about, I would simply give the account the name of the event, and create a hashtag for the event so others can reference it.

Very sorry to miss your comment! See “What to do if an employee hijacks your Twitter account” Looks like your account is still there in good shape, so hopefully you’ll be able to connect back again soon.

My account @aplacewebelong was suspended yesterday and I don’t really know why. I think It was for “aggressive following”, but it wasn’t intentional, seriously. I mean, I use twitter to talk with the people I know and my account is really important to me, please, give me back my account. I read all the rules and I promise this wont happen again. Excuse my english, I’m from Venezuela…

Thanks,

If someone has blocked you, can they still appear as “similar to you” on your home page? If not officially, is there a bug where, sometimes, it happens?

Reply

Dave Larson March 11, 2012 at 11:53 PM

They can. Twitter doesn’t consider blocks in generating its recommendations and similars.

Am using twitter for iPhone. Earlier my tweets were protected but after unprotecting them on the main Twitter site, replies etc don’t come up on the people who I follow and reply to. Please help, thanks!

You may want to delete and reinstall your iPhone app and reconnect to your account. That is even what Twitter suggests for some similar problems.

I had my account hacked into and was suspended.I did like 4 support tickets wish I read this before I did this. How long does it take for them to get back to me?It took me years to get all my followers.I have been on since 2007 and never had a problem until now.

Apologies for overlooking your comment. I started using a tablet and the browser wasn’t updating. The tickets explain (though it isn’t obvious) that you can’t create multiple tickets. Each time you create a new one, the old one is deleted, and the new one goes to the back of the line :-(

See “Why Twitter closed your support request without reading it.”

Are hashtags included in Twitter handle descriptions actually picked up in searches?

Is this worth doing?

I am working on maintaining/updating a corporate Twitter handle for a business…and want to advise if this is truly optimizing search results or is it just for “visibility”

Thanks!

Reply

Dave Larson March 1, 2012 at 11:55 PM

If by “Twitter handle descriptions” you mean the bio people fill out that appears on their main page, then no.

Twitter search only searches tweets, but there are a number of ways to search bios as well. Do a google search for “Twitter bio search” to see some of the options.

Also, the bio is often indexed by Google, so the information is useful in getting the word out about what a business is about.

Hi!
First of all, I must apologize for having written the following text as a DM to your twitter acc. I am now following your instructions ( that I should have done to begin with!) and sending my comments to you here.
I have opened your link also and read (tried) what might be similar to my own case.
Just like I have also opened and read ALL Twitter rules…on their support pages.

This is my story:
I created @TheAirPro on Feb.24 from London(UK) and on my laptop.
Everything ok then.
But as I was travelling back to Norway, and at the airport and from both IPhone and IPad, I TRIED to open this new account…and continue my work then !
The only e-mail message I received on my Iphone/Ipad was that I had to authorize ECHOFON as application for this new Twitter account… I tried and tried to do that but was kicked each time back (insert user-id+password!)

It is when I came home in Oslo and re-started my laptop that I saw my account had been suspended.
My argument:
I had to begin somewhere with this new account! It was going to be a business account (see the bio ) and began following airlines around the world. Ihad followed abt 20 ( I think ) until it all stopped. That made me SO ashamed because I had posted my new enterprise on LinkedIn and I have serious connections there ( that I have worked with in the past) Should they see my account suspended, they would not regard my business as serious.
I am a professional and this suspension really frustrated me.
As Twitter Support instructed me , I reported my claim on an e-mail and on the same night… I am still at it trying to push Twitter to open it again!
( #4721704 Twitter Support )

Please forgive me for this long comment but I really need to get going and had to deliver all details to you.
Thank you so much in advance and I do look forward to read your words back!

Very sorry to hear about your problems!

This may not be your issue, but if you file more than one ticket Twitter’s help system then doesn’t work properly. It looks like you got off to the right start, but be sure to check http://blog.tweetsmarter.com/twitter-downtime/why-twitter-closed-your-support-request-without-reading-it/ for some related information.

Twitter usually unsuspends new accounts upon request as long as you agree not to do whatever it is they explain is the reason they suspended your account. They are particularly harsh with new accounts, sadly :-(

And no problem leaving a long comment, I appreciate the detail :-)

Twitter suspended my account for aggressive @ replies. I did not read all the rules, and I broke them (no automatic apps, but manually @ messaging to many tweeps. I sent a ticket and replied to them and agreed to the terms. (Sadly, I did the BEFORE I read your article, so now I opened about 5 tickets. I replied back to each one. How can I get them to unsuspend my account. I really did screw up, but not intentionally- I just didn’t know better (until now, of course.). Please help. PS- I can’t tweet you because my account is suspended

Dave Larson February 28, 2012 at 11:24 PM

Very sorry to hear that, Steve! All you have to do is wait for the last ticket to be handled. It can take a few days :-(

And apologies for my not getting back to you sooner. Your message here was somehow hidden from my comment management interface, even though it showed on the blog post here.

P.S. What some people do is create a new account in order to use Twitter to tweet folks with questions, etc. Not strictly necessary, but wanted to let you know about that idea in case it might be useful for you.

Using twitter.com in firefox 9.x browser on a Windows7 pc .
Still having trouble figuring out why I can’t see replies to someone whom i follow (but doesn’t follow me) in the expanded/details box on their feed.
I see it on my home feed, so I know it was sent and I get the little message saying “tweet to @xyz was sent”. I see comments or other replies made to the same person on their feed (where i replied) by people who are also NOT followed by the person.
(my tweets are not protected).
Please Help?

yes i’m a noob, but i read and try to find answers before proceeding and asking questions ;)

Replies can be confusing, because there are several scenarios. See, for example, http://blog.tweetsmarter.com/twitter-rules/did-you-know-twitter-hides-some-tweets-to-prevent-you-from-eavesdropping/ for some details on that.

What I would need to know is who is replying to whom, and who follows whom, and where you are viewing the tweet. For example, it isn’t clear if you’re talking about replies you have made or that someone else has made. I feel like I almost understand, but if you could explain in the form who is replying to whom, and who follows whom, that would help. Thanks :-)

I am new to twitter and am using twitter.com mainly. I am following a couple media personalities who often have conversations on twitter. How do I see what others are tweeting to them so that I can chime in on the conversation?

Reply

Dave Larson February 28, 2012 at 11:29 PM

Simply do a search on tweets sent to them. Click here for an example. Here is what you would type into the search box at Twitter.com to create a search like this (using myself as an example):

to:tweetsmarter

…and then see where it says “Tweets Top / All” near the top of the page? If you want to see ALL tweets people are sending to that user, you need to click “All.” (The default search results are “Top”.)

Notice that you do NOT include the @ sign when doing a search like this. Good luck!

…and my apologies for not getting back to you sooner—Your message here was somehow hidden from my comment management interface, even though it showed on the blog post here.

I have taken my iPod back to where it was purchased, they looked it over ,said it was not mechanical prob. They gave me http//:support.twitter.com &@SupportTwitterHQ to seek help to resolve the prob.I did so & have heard nothing back.So I went to many others & got no help until I tweeted my ever loyal TweetSmarter who I am also loyal to(sorry, off track). They suggested U so here it is.

Very sorry to hear you’re having such frustrating problems, Elaine!

• First, WHAT Twitter software are you using? (You didn’t say.) If you’re not sure, just describe in some detail what you do to tweet and I’ll try to figure out what you’re using.
• Second, have you deleted and uninstalled the software one or more times?

(Just a note: I edited your comment slightly to make it easier to read.)

For freezing of apps, the only thing to do is to uninstall and then reinstall the app. For repeat freezing of apps on a particular device, recommend trying another app. If multiple apps having problems, you may have a problem with your device, or Twitter itself may be having a problem.

Serious problems coming from Twitter itself are usually cleared up in a few days.

I’m using a MAC, I’m looking for a recommendation for a Twitter app. on the desktop. The “old” Tweetdeck was my favorite and not impressed with the “new” Tweetdeck. Any help?

Reply

Dave Larson February 19, 2012 at 8:01 PM

Since you’re switching from TweetDeck, Benny, I would consider either using HootSuite or MarketMeSuite in the browser, or setting up Hootsuite as your Mac Twitter desktop app (warning: technical!)

Reply

Benny February 15, 2012 at 10:33 AM

When I RT with edit/comment using Tweetdeck on my MAC do I put my comment before the RT or at the very end?

Reply

Dave Larson February 15, 2012 at 8:04 PM

Good question! It can work both ways. The key is making it clear which part is your comment. Let’s look at a couple of examples:

• This is awesome! >Pics of people helping those in need: RT @AwesomeUser
• Pics of people helping those in need: RT @AwesomeUser /I love what these people do!

While it’s not necessary to use text like “>” or “/” you see how it helps make clear which part is your comment?

Generally, if you think putting your comment in front would encourage more people to check out the link in a tweet, that’s a good place for your comment.

That’s an interesting question, Andreas! You would need a Twitter CRM-type application.

You might want to try http://home.sproutsocial.com free for 30 days and see if it meets your needs. Unfortunately, features change pretty rapidly on Twitter applications, and so I can’t promise that will be exactly what you need, but if memory serves they did offer that feature.

I have been having this problem lately with my twitter. every time i click on a link, that link doesn’t load. i have this problem on Firefox, chrome and IE 8. but when using chrome, if i highlight the link and then i right click on it, and click on go to. sometimes it would load and sometimes it wont.

any thoughts on that

thanks
Al

Dave Larson February 3, 2012 at 2:43 PM

It sounds like you’re talking about a desktop problem where you go to Twitter.com in different browsers, and then click links (not a mobile browser problem).

I realize it doesn’t load, but what DOES happen? A page with an error? No page at all? A pop-up error message? An on-page error message? What happens when you click links in other web pages?

What version of Firefox are you using? You need to update if you don’t have the latest version. Chrome tends to be auto-updating, and Internet Explorer I don’t recommend, although you might want to try the latest version.

But I’m NOT recommending updating IE and using it, I’m just saying if you want to, you can try that. I DO recommend updating Firefox and trying it.

Al February 3, 2012 at 5:18 PM

Dave,

thanks for you reply. sorry for not being more specific on my problem. Once i click on any link on twitter. i just don’t get a page at all i always i get a timeout error since it takes to long to load the page.

But the curious thing is that if use Chrome and if i highlight the link and then i right click on it and click on go to the URL. it does load the page, although it wont load the the t.co links if i use this method. it does load bit.ly links.

If i click links from other websites it does load the page.
I use the FireFox 10 and the latest ver. of Chrome.

It seems that I’m the only one having this problem. i already ask some other people i follow on twitter and so far they dont have this problem.

And just to confirm, the problem happens when you click links in Tweets while on Twitter.com, correct?

http://ht.ly/8SpUR (work )
http://www.davidglarson.com/uncategorized/262/ (work )
http://bit.ly/sDFhyN (work )

Correct the problem happens when I’m in Twitter.com from your test it seems the t.co url is the problem.

Reply

Dave Larson February 4, 2012 at 7:31 PM

Since it works in Chrome and fails in Firefox, I would do a reinstall of Firefox or turn off all plugins. I don’t find any issues with the t.co service or with Firefox using it, so a reinstall of Firefox would be the usual first step to test it further against t.co links, or to turn off all plugins.

There are several twitter accounts, @officialcancer and @bluntedjewels and others, which are spreading a hoax involving a supposed donation for retweeting a picture of a “cancer baby”. This hoax has gone viral on Facebook, tumblr, and Twitter and it’s very distressing for the boy’s family.

The boy pictured is my Pastor’s 7 year old son Samuel who had the non-cancerous hemangioma tumor on his face removed years ago. His parents never authorized use of this picture and are aghast at how to get them all taken down. That’s why I’m trying to get your help!

I’ve been sending replies to people who shared this pic and pleading with the above users to remove them, but I’ve for the most part been ignored.

Please help this mother protect her son!

Thanks,

Holly

Reply

Dave Larson February 1, 2012 at 11:31 AM

Very sorry to hear that Holly!

There are definitely things you can do, but you should know that once something has truly “gone viral,” you’ll never be able to fully stop it, unfortunately :-(

If a Twitter account is created to promote the hoax, you’ll want to get in touch with Twitter via http://bit.ly/TWICKET but, and this is very important, you’ll need to read Why Twitter closed your support request without reading it.

Twitter may be able to suspend accounts created merely to hoax others after reviewing your information (which will remove all their tweets), but it will NOT be able to stop others from tweeting about it. However Twitter does not delete tweets of non-suspended accounts unless asked to do unless it has a valid request from courts, government or law enforcement (and usually government and law enforcement have to go through the courts).

If you want to get others to help you, you’ll need to have an explanation of the situation somewhere that you can refer to. Blogging about the problem is one way to put the explanation somewhere you can link to.

By blogging about it you can potentially create your own “army” of people helping you help the mother protect her son.
